Point-of-Care Ultrasonography

Point-of-Care Ultrasonography (POCUS) is a medical imaging tool that allows trained healthcare providers to use ultrasound during a patient’s examination. Using a small handheld device, ultrasound images can be viewed in real time to help evaluate certain symptoms, assess specific areas of the body, and support clinical decision-making.

POCUS can provide valuable information at the time of a patient’s visit and may help providers better understand what could be causing certain symptoms. Because the examination is performed at the point of care, findings can be considered together with the patient’s medical history, physical examination, and other clinical information. When additional evaluation is needed, patients may be referred for comprehensive diagnostic imaging or specialty care.
